Welcome to Wiccan Key Words Part Two! In this series of blog posts we will cover commonly used words in the practice of Wicca and Witchcraft and their meanings.
Wicca:
A form of modern witchcraft, founded in England in the mid 20th century with pre-Christian pagan origins.
Altar:
A personal space used for rituals and prayer.
Athame:
A ceremonial knife, used for directing energy, never for cutting.
Blessed be:
Blessed Be is an expression of blessing used during rituals.
Coven:
A group of witches. In books, a coven of Witches often gather at night to make potions and cast spells. Covens consist of at least 13 practising Witches.
Paganism:
Paganism is a spiritual way of life. A modern religious movement incorporating beliefs or practices from outside the main world religions, especially nature worship.
Witchcraft:
The practice of magic, spells and the invocation of spirits.
Sabbat:
Sabbat is a Pagan holiday, celebrated at the equinoxes, solstices and four points in between.
Ritual:
A Ritual is a religious ceremony where a series of actions are performed most importantly in a specific order for a particular purpose.
