Each year there are only two days in which daytime and nighttime are exactly equal in length. These days are the equinoxes in Spring and Autumn. The Spring Equinox this year is Saturday the 20th March (so it’s just around the corner!). We’re going to give you a little crash course on what it means for witches, and how you can best take advantage of all the wonders the equinox brings.
What is The Spring Equinox?
The word ‘Equinox’ is derived from the latin word ‘aequinoctium’. Aequi means ‘equal’ and Noct refers to ‘night’, this gives the literal translation of equal night. An Equinox is simply a time where night and day are of equal lenth, this happens because of the tilt of the Earth’s axis and how it’s orbit around the sun lands it in a perfect position for the sun to shine exactly above the equator.
Ostara? What does that mean!
Ostara is simply what witches call the Spring Equinox. It marks the official first day of spring and represents a time of renewal, balance and rebirth. The name Ostara comes from the Germanic lunar Goddess, also known as Ēostre, an embodiment of the great Goddess who gave birth to the Sun God at the Winter Solstice. Ostara is a time of balance and equilibrium.
What does the Equinox represent Magically?
After the Spring Equinox, the days get longer as the sun’s strength slowly grows. Alongside the sun, the Earth begins growing new life too. This makes the Spring Equinox a perfect time to witness earlier sunrises, later sunsets and growing life. You shouldn’t worry about being able to celebrate exactly on the date, but instead, spend the rest of the month of March welcoming spring with open arms.
How can I celebrate Ostara?
Whether you choose to celebrate the Spring Equinox in a ritualistic way or not, there are so many ways you can take full advantage of the Earth’s longer days and the growing of new life.

Setting up a spring altar
Setting up your Spring Altar can be as simple or as complex as you like! Lay out Warm coloured flowers, Black and White candles (we have a really cool collection of witchy candles- click HERE to shop our collection), seeds, citrus fruits, Citrine, Clear Quartz, aventurine or an offering of milk or honey for the faeries. Tarot Cards such as the High Priestess and Nine of Cups are also a welcomed addition to your altar.
A non-ritualistic way to celebrate
One of the best ways to celebrate the abundance of new life around you is to fully immerse yourself in nature. Look around you, do you see new growth? Hear baby birds chirping? Can you see all the bright green leaves and emerging flowers? Try to really take notice of your surroundings and how they make you feel.
You can also plant flowers in your own garden, take a walk in the sunshine and talk to the trees. Spring clean your home and make it smell amazing, clear out the clutter and donate anything that could be reused to a charity shop. Collect flowers, have a picnic, swim in a stream, lay out in the sun and allow it to warm your whole body! All this hippy sounding stuff is amazing at cleaning your soul and bringing new inner growth.
Final thoughts
No matter how you decide to celebrate the Equinox, try to take time out of your daily schedule to explore your connection to nature, allow yourself to grow and blossom, and always remember to ground yourself and your emotions if things begin to feel uncertain or uncomfortable.
Sending all the love, light and wishes of growth your way.
Love & Light,
ML xo
